Early Math Skills Matter!
A child is engaged in crafting colorful paper shapes, surrounded by scissors and various paper pieces.

It is critical that we give children plenty of opportunities to explore, play and learn during the early years.

The Why…

Children need to have numbers, shapes, patterns, different objects to compare, things to measure and match objects by pointing to them.

The How…

  • Go on a nature walk and count how many leaves, acorns or birds you see.
  • Show how you measure liquid and solids when you cook dinner or bake.
  • Count the number of cars on the road, the stairs and food at the grocery store.
  • Point to and name shapes.
  • Sort things by color and size.
  • Talk about sizes(big, medium and small) when you are folding clothes.
  • Draw or make patterns( three red squares and two blue circles). Repeat.
  • Build with blocks. Talk about the height, width and count the number of blocks as you point to each one.
  • Read stories and count objects in the book.
  • Use beans, M&Ms, chocolate chips or carrot sticks to show simple addition and subtraction. Example: If I eat two carrots, how many are left?

Make math fun! Show children how math is used in every day life as you are out and about, making dinner, doing chores or driving around town.
