Science on-the-go: Family Nature Walk!

Children are natural explorers! Turn a family walk into a nature walk and a chance to explore and you’ll quickly see that science is all around you!  Here are a few simple ideas to get you started:

  • Let children dig on their own and see what they find. Encourage them to feel the soil and sand. Then identify how the soil and sand slops and slides as they dig deeper. Ask them what the difference between wet and dry soil is? Give them the chance to sculpt and create.
  • As children explore and discover, ask open-ended questions about their observations–What did you find? Is that a bug? How does it move? Discuss the color and shape of leaves or seashells. Collect them and group them by color, size or shape.
  • Watch how a frog, animal, or insect moves. Lift up a log and examine what lives under it. If you are on a beach walk, gather the shells, look for sand dollars, try to find a hermit crab or write and draw in the sand with a stick.
